How would you go about writing an Ashtanga book?
What would you include, what leave out?
How much depth would you go in to?
I find I still go back to John Scott's book, David Swenson's too obviously, and I was looking through Gregor's Primary just this afternoon. 240 pages looks healthy enough, John Scott's is 140 pages but the pictures are small, Gregor's runs to 300.
The power, POWER of Ashtanga Yoga, interesting to find the P word in the title, was that the publishers again I wonder?
"Beryl Bender Birch from New York was studying Ashtanga yoga with Norman Allen and then with Pattabhi Jois. This woman wrote a book, but the publisher told her that the name “Ashtanga Yoga” does not suit, it is not clear and she had to change the name, so it turned into “Power Yoga”. David Swenson. I happen to think Matthew Sweeney's Ashtanga Yoga As it Is is a gem among Ashtanga books. Sure, it lacks the asana breakdowns, but contains a lot of very frank information about integrating an Ashtanga practice into one's life that you don't generally find in practice manuals and the like. Thoughts?
Massive Sweeney fan here, essential text for the ashtanga blogger when you're trying to remember the name of a posture and an accepted spelling : ) I agree he packs a lot into the information section at the beginning before he gets into the sequences. Same goes for his second Vinyasa Krama book, lots in there too, found the format too bi, bit unmanageable but I believe there's a new version out, same size as the other. And of course he has that excellent bacbending and tic tac section in the second one. It's the 240 pages that interests me about Kino's was ready to assume it as just another beginners ashtanga picture book but 240p, that's a lot.
Just noticed the time, running late for practice, damned olympics
Serious Sweeney fan. Both Ashtanga As It Is and Vinyasa Krama are bibles for me. John Scott's book is also something I am always referring to. Then if you want something sacred, Lino Miele's Ashtanga book...OMG!
anon, did you hear that Lino has a new book out, primary to advanced B. only in Italian so far, details on his website. thanks for the input.
Thanks for checking out the cover of my new book and including it on your blog! I've been working on it for awhile. It will be borken up into two segments. Part One is the philosophy and history of Ashtanga Yoga (including my explanation of how asana works to heal the body and mind) and Part Two is the Primary Series. Part will also include a full explanation of backbends, bandhas and jump back/jump through. I am really excited about it and grateful to be working with Shambhala Pubs!
Hi Kino, thanks for stopping by and giving the heads up on how your book's structured, sounds good, look forward to seeing it.
Review copy of Kino's Book arrived this weekend, should have a review up Tuesday 4th June. here's my provisional thoughts from fb yesterday
"Kino's new book- review copy. Take a moment and think what you were expecting and hoping Kino's book would be like.......yep, it's EXACTLY llike that. Every posture crammed full of the tips, hints and encouragement we've come to expect from her DVDs and YouTube videos. Plus some surprises. Home Ashtangi's will love it, but teachers too for an endless supply of ideas to help their students. Kino at her best. Had planned on being a stern and objective critic but she had me with hello ( her intro chapters anyway). Great job Kino, thank you for sharing all you've learned in those hundreds of workshops. Main review to come on my blog probably Tuesday assuming I can put my Mac back together".
Just posted a preview/review of Kino's book here

Hi Megan, missed the 'Thoughts?'at the end of your comment i think.
Yes love Matthew's book, essential for blogging too when you want to check quickly the spelling of an asana or the order of Advanced when your feeling adventurous.
His Vinyasa Krama book is excellent too, a hell of a lot in there too in the beginning section before you get on to the asana, learned a lot from that book.
