I really should write a post, if only because M. is home in Japan for a couple of weeks and will feel let down a little if she checks in and finds the Same Krishnamacharya post on kriyas, heaven knows what she fears I'm up to while she's away.
Noticed from the counter at the bottom of the blog that I've gone over 500, 000 hits, 400, 000 of those are probably M. as she shakes her head at what I'm up to when she's not here,
So a quick post while the rice cooker does it's thing, I have craving for a simple bowl of rice, Japanese pickles and sprinkles.
I did want to post this recent video of Kino's kapotasana that I came across this morning just before practice. Look how far she gets her hips forward, her thighs pushed far far forward and the pressing through of her sacrum. Add that to Richard Freeman's dropping the pubic bone back towards the coccyx as you push forwards and you have, as Kino loves to say, "a firm foundation" for a more comfortable and perhaps deeper kapo.
Here's a link to my post on Richard's AYC backbending workshop, I transcribed part of it, notice this bit an hour into the workshop
59:30 We're going to drop the coccyx, let it flow into the pc muscles but we want to get the pubic bone down and back, because the pubic bone, she's receiving the coccyx and the fibres of the PC muscles toned actually bring the coccyx and pubic bone slightly closer together.
if we just pinch the buttocks, push the pubic bone forward, we're making the pelvic floor longer, more narrow, this will create (tension?) in the Si joints and if not there then the lumbar spine.
We trim the legs slightly inwards, spin them downwards, the coccyx drops, pubic bone stays down and the sacrum goes in and up,
The sacrum is not the coccyx, if the sacrum follows the coccyx down and tries to go into the pelvic floor, the pubic bone gets freaked out.
See the sacrum is the mother of the coccyx, the coccyx is the groom and the bride the pubic bone. In yoga time, the pubic bone sets up the width, the right shape of the pelvic floor and the the coccyx comes and everything is OK. then if the mother-in-law of the also follows the little prince, she is huge, wedge shaped, she tries to come into the pelvic floor, the bride sees the mother-in-law and runs out the other side.
In all these backbends, the direction of the sacrum, once the pelvic floor is balanced, the SI joints become balanced in a way in which the sacrum seems to float forward and up out of the SI joints.
But the coccyx drops down and comes forward, pubic bone drops down and stays back
The coccyx and sacrum are going in two different directions (?).
I've been working on that all year in my backbends, much more comfortable and effective. This morning I kept it in mind while trying to get my hips as far forward as Kino and had my nicest kapo in ages.
I'd post a video but M. took the camera with her to Japan, and besides I have this ridiculous My name is Earl moustache at the moment that really has to go.
Since Santorini a few months ago I've mostly been wrapped up with Primary, slowing and lengthening the breath such that I've had to split the series in two to make time for pranayama and meditation. I practice 2nd, once perhaps twice a week only, settling for toes.
This morning, however thanks to Kino pushing forward and Richard's coccyx/pubic bone relationship, I ended up comfortably dropping back just before my heels and spider walking my fingers up to get a fair hold and to settle. Could have gone deeper on a second attempt no doubt but didn't want to push it given the lack of recent back bending recently, the bare minimum of three Urdhava Dhanurasana's and three drop backs.
I mention it because it shows that you don't seem to lose the backbending ( or not for long) and that so much of this is technique ...and perhaps confidence, like riding a bike comes to mind.
While we're at it, here's Kino doing the same thing with the legs in a drop back video from, going by the shorts, the same session.
