This morning the thought struck me...
'Asana is the most necessary yet least significant element of my practice...'
Is that a contradiction?
Will no doubt be coming back to this throughout the day and wondering to what extent, if indeed any, I actually believe that to be true.

... asanas are a tool to access our inner self. A very powerful tool. No contradiction in your thought from my own experience!
Folks with a Judeo-Christian background tend to create a hierarchy because of beliefs about the body? I wonder. Seems there's lots of "putting asana in it's place" energy -- not sure it's necessary in personal practice. I understand why it's necessary culturally, but that's nothing to do with one's personal practice.
Asanas are an accessory to yoga.
Still musing on it, kind of been thinking of the asana as the container for everything else, the breath the drishti...or better something one inhabits, necessary but not so significant in and of itself. Judeo-Christian/ hierarchy/ beliefs about the body.... glad you added the question mark Karen.
Hell, it was a pithy thought for that time of morning...but pithy thoughts, never trust em, even/especially if I come up with them myself.
'tool' and 'inner self' are problematic for a Heideggarian Chiara but I take your point.
'accessory' like it Anon, having lived in Japan for a number of years I remember how the the outfit ended up becoming an accessory to the accessory.
yes, lest we confuse the mean with the end.
