SBP's Runway Project. " Wherever I lay my mat...."

Small Blue Pearls has had a project going recently where people are sending pictures of their mats, just their mats, laid out wherever they happen to practice,

...their Runway

I kept seeing these images popping up on fb and wondered what was going on, finally caught a post explaining it.

"...this project is about daily practice and how we manage it regardless of where we are. It's about the possibility that each practice holds at the start—before we even begin". Laura

There's now also a facebook page
Runway project Facebook page
Visit this link for instructions on how to send in your own pictures

Here's a link to the photo gallery itself for inspiration

And here are mine.

I noticed that the pictures I have pop up early in my holiday photo albums. It seems it's the first thing I do. M. is off checking the view or the bathroom and I'm looking for where I'll be able to best lay my mat.

Munich 2009 (Morning)
Below is one of my favourites, while on a solo practice break in South Wales I was given a room upgrade, all this just for me and my mat.

South Wales July 2011
Balconies are always nice, this was the first I ever practiced on.

Athens, view of Acropolis 2010
Stone floors are a bonus as the mat grips, sadly I didn't bring my more cushioning Manduka
Athens 2010
Worst case scenario, between the beds of a twin room

Note the ipad with the Vinyasa Krama sequence sheets from my practice book
Santorini had the best of both worlds, lots of space and a stone floor...I'd taken my Manduka too thankfully, the one in Santorini blue that manduka had sent me especially.
Santorini, Greece, 2012
Above is the Before shot, below is the After
Soggy, sweat drenched post 2nd series mat
OK, I take it back this is the worst case scenario...I ended up moving it into the bathroom and practiced there instead.
Bruges 2011
Wherever we find the space right. This one reminds me of Ramaswami's Vinyasa Krama TT course in LA. We were sharing rooms so I used to the get up 4am and practice Ashtanga in the stairwell before going on to the three hour Vinyasa Krama asana class ( until the second week when it began to get a lot tougher with the Triangle and On one leg sequences).
S. Wales before room upgrade
No place like home
Home Shala 2011
And the ones that got a way.

SBP is looking for pictures of just the runway, no bodies, no asana just the mat ( OK perhaps a cat or dog....). Sadly I didn't take a shot of just the mat here, shame love the colours.
So again, here are the links, send in your own pictures and help them with the project, they're aiming for 750.

Really doesn't matter, where your runway is, doesn't have to be a fancy location or a particularly pretty shot.

Thanks so much Grimmly!

Your photos are all up and in the January Gallery (http://www.smallbluepearls.com/runways/january-2013-gallery/) but this is so much better because we can read about each place... and I do love that last one too, the blue mat, the blue roof but alas, this project is about daily practice and how we manage it regardless of where we are. It's about the possibility that each practice holds at the start—before we even begin. The pets are allowed since most of them supervise our home practices quite carefully :)

Thank you!

Your welcome, was fun looking back at these. have added this line of yours to the post,

"...this project is about daily practice and how we manage it regardless of where we are. It's about the possibility that each practice holds at the start—before we even begin"

That said, most of these pictures are of holiday practice where I'm laying out my mat and wondering if i'll be able to cobble together a decent practice without waking/disturbing the wife, or banging into something. Santorini was more in line with your quote though as practice was the purpose of the trip and I couldn't wait to practice in that room.

I like the pictures on your galleries of different places/spaces people practice at home, their regular spots. I wish there was a picture of the the mat in the hallway that David Garrigues practiced in. The bespoke spaces are great, love mine but have a soft spot for the little corners some manage to steal to set up their runway, something beautiful about that.
