Iyengar Drop back challenge Day 5

See Day 1 for an explanation of what's going on with this.

Both dropping back and coming up feel pretty secure now, more a case of getting the rhythm and making it consistent with the breath. Once the rhythm is nailed, the plan is to slowly tweak it bit by bit bringing the feet a little closer together dropping back and losing the splayed feet coming back up.

Find myself really looking forward to drop backs now, couldn't wait to get home. I think I did 18 in this one, lost count. A few weeks ago I grumbled my way through three now I'm having to force myself to stop and not over do it.

First couple of days I was feeling a little stiff but this morning was fine and I went through Intermediate without any discomfort. I'd been wondering how Kapo would feel but it was pretty much the same as usual, no better no worse.

By virtue of the fact that I have a shitty internet connection that put about 20 pauses in this one-minute video, I can see from those stills that you're bringing your head up too soon and that's what's making your coming up jerky and why once or twice you didn't make it up. Head up last, head up last, head up last, head up last... can't be said too many times.

hi Susan : )

Just watched the normal speed version . I am leading with my head both back and up. tried to change it going down but it put my rhythm out. Will try to take up last coming up as well today. Checking the video though i lead with head throughout even on the ones where i drop back and come up smoothly on the breath. It feels to m,e more of a hip thing that I miss time rather than my head when it goes wrong.

But I can work on tweaking it bit by bit once the rhythm is consistent, it's coming and I'm really enjoying myself with them now.

Will post a normal speed one on Sunday, perhaps some slow mo too so your internet can keep up ; )

Heard your getting on the cushion more now, good luck with that.

Oh that's so funny! You look like a hyperactive, little hummingbird.

Awesome! You've inspired me and now I'm trying to do more than the usual 3-5 dropbacks.. two days ago I did 17 but yesterday could only do about 8 (so tired!).

We'll see how this morning goes...

Hummingbird??? : ) glad i made you smile, saw you were having a tough week, hope it clears up soon.

I worked out how to speed things up on Quicktime and now I can't stop myself. Will do a slow one on sunday though so I can compare it with day one.

I think I might be onto something though. It makes sense to me to get a nice secure rhythm then keep tweaking the feet (or the head) little by little while still keeping the rhythm. Think it might be a way for me to get rid of my splayed feet.

Glad your having fun with it too Christine. Can't believe how comfortable I'm becoming with these in such a short space of time.

Want to take it a bit further on Sunday, perhaps two sets with a couple of minutes breather in between, two sets of 18 perhaps.

Sheshadri is gonna be working me on my splayed feet. Tuesday was... over the top.

I hope Venki doesn't make me do drop backs! When I registered I gave him a look and told him they are still terrible.

Yes the speed up is funny & made me laugh so thank you. I think you should do some intentional yogic comedy.

the head last thing is hard for many people to get. In order to learn it, I just got myself into a mental state of trust, knowing that I would be fine to leave my head the very last. Since you are doing one after the other, you could try just leaving the head back the entire time you come up. In other words, make the flow even more of a flow by coming up, leaving the head back, and going down again. Another place you might be able to work on correcting the head is in kapo. Since you are only on your knees in kapo, there is really no distance to fall (or even really a possibility of a fall), so you can leave the head back the whole time. Correcting the head is totally worth it, because it really does fuck with drop backs in a big way. The head will pull you back off balance every time. Try thinking of heart first and open. Maybe you need to just do slow ones until you get it. Go down and hold for five breaths and then come up. Doing that forces you to control your way up much more than using the rhythmic momentum of a series of up/down/up/down drop backs.
