As a Woodwind repairer I sit at my work bench all day with a feeling of missed opportunity. Wouldn't it be great to be able to sit in half or full lotus while stripping down a vintage Sax. I've looked all over the net for a chair that would allow it, but the seats tend to be too small and if you want arms then they tend to get in the way.But now I'm a proud owner of a Steelcase Leap office chair. It's a high end fully adjustable chair that I picked up used but like new on Ebay. Supposed to be great for the back, you can check out it's features here.

Best of all for my purpose is that the seat slides forward or back. Slid forward you have a good base for your lotus. Add some tilt at the back and there's no need for a Zafu. The arms tilt out giving you lots of room for your knees.

Heyy.. what a coincidence. I work in front of the computer a lot too and noticed that ever since I've gotten a new chair with armrest and back, my hips have been a lot tighter, especially my psoas and hip flexors. I've gone to my backless and armless chair, basically just a stool, and I am sitting up straighter and on half lotus most of the time. But I work from home so I guess not everybody can have the luxury of changing their chair in an office environment. Love your blog! Really inspires me all the way from Malaysia.
That looks exactly like the chairs in our office. And yes, I sit in lotus! Or gomukhasana, with the hips on the chair, one foot tucked under and top leg dangling over. MMM deep, after 20 minutes or so..
Also, you have a super-cool job, Grimmly.
Hi Malaysia! glad your getting something out of the blog, has it helped your jump back ofton wonder if this has actually helped anybody. yes, great to be able to sit in lotus at work and work on opening up the hips. My job has quite a meditative quality sometimes, now even more so.
Susan, how do you get any work done with your hands locked in Gomukhasana, must get lots of funny looks. I'm lucky my lotus is hidden under my apron. Yes job can be cool, got into it because I came across an old sandlemaker/poet in the Plaka in Athens years ago. Thought it would be perfect to repair and think all day. here's a link to him http://www.melissinos-poet.com/eng/index.html
Ah, if I could only dictate then that would be wonderful, but alas I must type and mouse so I can only do the legs. BUT, I have to go back and look at your chair again and see if it has the metal bar across the back for hanging jackets on, which is PERFECT for reaching back and grabbing with dropback/kapo arms. Oooo, I hope yours has it :)
The sandal-maker is cool, he inspired you to repair woodwinds? Wow. When I speak to you I think of the neglected flute I have that needs overhauling, and also Un Coeur en Hiver, a film I loved (though that was about strings).
OK it doesn't have it, but a little DIY?
And i'm Daniel Auteuil, cool! Must think of a way of getting said neglected flute to me and I'll make sound pretty again for you. Actually i have that week off in march, have been thinking about coming to YP fo a session or two. What make is the flute ?
Hey.. that would be cool! I emailed you about the flute. And do come to YP!
