10 days off.....Tick-tacs????

My holiday starts Saturday. I had planned on working towards the Drop back and having a reading week. Getting the dropback early has thrown things out a little. Can't keep posting the infinitesimal improvements daily, comments have already been made. So need to come up with something else.

I'm thinking 10 days of full intermediate (lately I've been doing Primary on up to Kapo and into backbends), get comfortable with that second half. I have the Richard Freeman's DVD to practice along with, never got on with his primary but his intermediate is excellent.

And in the afternoons....and for posting here, I'm thinking of having a go at Tic-Tacks, (Tic-Tocks, flip flop flapping foolishness....is there a consensus on what to call these?) with the aid of Matthew Sweeney's new book Vinyasa Krama. Could be an absolute disaster but an interesting one perhaps, should be fun at least.

Strange but I just couldn't picture how it works physically, as if my arms would twist out of their sockets trying to flip over. The video below is my attempt to work out the basic idea....broad brush strokes if you will.

This isn't a serious recommendation, more a line of thinking set off by this post: if you have Vinyasa Krama, take a look at the inversion-to-backbend transitions toward the end of the Uddi Krama. Example: shoulderstand dropover to bridge, one-legged bridge, kick up to shoulderstand, both sides.

That sort of work might be a good intro to formal tic-tacs, not that I'd know. Hah!

No, this is great, am looking at it now. Bought the book for all the Vinyasa, backbend, dropback stuff at the beginning, never really tried any of the sequences. Wish he would bring out a DVD of them, can't get on with going by the pictures. That headstand to backbend for example, can't visualise it. But as you say a great intro perhaps, will give it a try tomorrow. His sequences do look fun though, the whole book is a great piece of work. I wonder if Ashtangis as a whole develop an eye for detail in other aspects of their lives or if people with an eye for detail are drawn to Ashtanga. As a repairer it's ALL in the detail.

Grimmly - your backbends are nice and deep, so you really should be able to go from handstand right into a backbend. If I can do it, you can do it. Until you are comfortable doing that, I don't see how you can really do a free standing tick tock (and I believe tick tock is the correct term, conceptually - it's like your body is a clock, ticking and tocking back and forth).

I know you enjoy videotaping everything, but I do wonder if perhaps your early efforts on things would be better served in private - things change with the camera there. Without the camera, you might be more free. Of course, you gotta do what works for YOU.

But YC the whole point of the blog from the beginning was to chart the EARLY stuff. YouTube is full of perfect videos We have the teacher DVD's and their ideal asana, vinyasas, dropbacks etc. Loved these videos but they bore no relation to my own struggles. The videos are for me, to analyze my own attempts. I post them so anyone else at a similar stage can look at someone other than themselves, struggling with it as they are.
Maybe I was a little self-conscious of the camera in the beginning, now I hardly think about it. I don't tend to film my main practice but if there's something I'm particularly working on in the evening, I just hit record and post it warts an all.

I kinda liked this one. We often see something and just think "no way" but if you start to break it down and take a moment to work it out it starts to make sense. This video is of that first break it down/work it out stage.

That said I'm still at the "no way" stage with this one, that drop over, quite a leap of faith.

Thanks for you other comment too on the other post

I think you are completely certifiable working on these. Good luck! :)

MS is coming to YP this summer. One of the sessions is on chandra krama. Wish he would do simha! He may have dates at triyoga too, haven't checked.
